Upcoming Research Activities
ENERGISE takes an interdisciplinary approach to the Just Energy Transition in South Africa, bringing together engineering, policy and sustainable entrepreneurship.
The Centre is based on the recognition that technological innovation alone cannot achieve a just energy transition. New energy technologies need to be embedded in enabling policy frameworks, viable entrepreneurial ecosystems and the social realities of the communities they are intended to serve.
By combining these perspectives, ENERGISE aims to develop energy solutions that are technically sound, socially equitable, economically viable and responsive to local needs.
Interdisciplinary research for a Just Energy Transition

Engineering

Entrepreneurship
ENERGISE investigates the technological foundations of South Africa’s energy transition, with a focus on power systems, control engineering and energy-system modelling.
Research includes the development of open-source models for South African energy systems, the integration of renewable energy resources, grid stability and advanced control approaches, as well as technologies supporting sector coupling and the electrification of transport.
The aim is to develop context-sensitive technical solutions that are scalable, affordable and aligned with local needs and capabilities.
ENERGISE examines the policy and governance frameworks required for an inclusive and sustainable energy transition.
Research considers how long-term planning, regulation, market design, public procurement and other policy instruments shape technological development and determine how benefits and opportunities are distributed. Particular attention is given to enabling greater renewable energy integration, decentralisation, grid access and participation by communities and private-sector actors.
ENERGISE explores how innovative and sustainable entrepreneurship can contribute to a Just Energy Transition.
Research focuses on new products, services and business models that combine environmental sustainability and social impact with economic viability. This includes renewable energy ventures, inclusive business models for affordable energy access, local value creation and entrepreneurial approaches that strengthen community participation and ownership.
Living Labs
ENERGISE complements interdisciplinary research with a transdisciplinary Living Lab approach. Researchers work together with policymakers, businesses, practitioners, civil society and local communities to co-create and test solutions in real-world settings.
The Living Labs provide spaces for experimentation, knowledge exchange and participatory research. They connect academic research with practical implementation and help ensure that proposed solutions are scientifically sound while also being socially robust, economically viable and politically feasible.
Mini-Grid Living Labs
Two complementary Living Labs in rural and peri-urban settings will explore decentralised and affordable renewable energy solutions together with local communities. Their work addresses challenges including energy access, affordability, local markets and grid stability.
Policy Living Lab
The Policy Living Lab provides a space to jointly explore regulatory frameworks and policy instruments supporting a gradual and inclusive liberalisation of South Africa’s energy market, including questions of grid access, tariff structures and decentralised energy governance.
Entrepreneurial Ecosystem Living Lab
The Entrepreneurial Ecosystem Living Lab connects students, start-ups, researchers and local partners to develop and test sustainable business models and strengthen innovation and entrepreneurship around the Just Energy Transition.
