University of Venda (UNIVEN)
UNIVEN is situated in Thohoyandou, Limpopo, South Africa, and is dedicated to transformative education and research, particularly in the realm of renewable energy and sustainable practices. UNIVEN is committed to advancing South Africa’s JET by focusing on innovation in renewable energy systems, waste-to-energy solutions, community involvement, and skills-based entrepreneurship, especially in underserved areas. UNIVEN’s Strategic Plan for 2021–2025 emphasizes curriculum innovation, community engagement, sustainability, and transdisciplinary research that align with the ENERGISE Center’s mission of fostering interdisciplinary education and creating inclusive entrepreneurial ecosystems. By integrating grassroots insights into the national JET agenda, UNIVEN ensures that the energy transition includes all regions and social groups.
The university has established itself as a hub for renewable energy research through several initiatives led by the Department of Physics. Notable projects include the Biogas-to-Fertiliser Integrated Farming Systems, which combines animal waste management with vegetable production and entrepreneurship training in rural communities, and the Second-Life Solar and Circular PV Projects focused on repurposing decommissioned solar panels for rural electrification. Additionally, UNIVEN collaborates with local municipalities to develop solar-powered micro-grids, enhancing food and energy security in remote areas. Two flagship centers at UNIVEN, the Institute for Rural Development and the Green Technology Confucius Institute, further elevate its capacity to implement community-driven JET innovations. The Institute for Rural Development emphasizes participatory approaches and energy literacy among marginalized groups, while the Confucius Institute fosters collaboration between Africa and China on green technology education, bridging gaps in local technical capacity.
